BCYF John A. Shelburne Community Center open its doors in 1970 under the unbrella of Parks and Recreation, it was named Washington Park Recreation Center at that time. In 1972 the center was named in homor of Mr. John A. Shelburne a native of Roxbury, who committed over 30 years of social service into the City of Boston's youuth and families. Mr. Shelburne was one of the first African American's to receive a athletic scholarship from Dartmouth College and graduate with honors. For over 45 years the center has created and implemented innovative programs that enhanced opportunities for teens, youth, elders, adults and families. We continue to provide our constituents with educational programs, recreational programs and events, fitness and wellness programs, computer programs, community engagement resources year-round,etc.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Jr. Counselor - Assist the camp director and senior counselor's with the daily activities for the campers, assist in setting up and breaking down for activities, monitor the safety of campers during all activities, indoors and outdoors, and participate in all activities with campers. Perform other related duties as assigned.


Office Assistant - Assist the Office Manager with daily administrative work; taking incoming phone calls and messages, filing campers information, record campers sign-in and sign-out forms. Perform other related duties as assigned.


Computer Assistant - Assist the Computer Instructor with the daily classes with campers, assist with the upkeep of the computer lab, assist campers with assignments and projects. Perform other related duties as assigned.

The Ideal Candidate for this Job:

Jr. Counselor - 1. Some experience working with children ages 7 to 12 years old and likes working with children. 2. Works good in a team setting, 3. Good personality and energetic.

Office Assistant - 1. Good customer service skills. 2. Good Time Management skills. 3. Basic Computer skills.

Computer Assistant - 1. Some experience working with children 7 to 12 years old, and like children. 2. Some Computer knowledge to assist campers with projects. 3. Outgoing and creative.
