Dorchester Bay Youth Force is a community organizing and leadership development program for teens in Dorchester, Roxbury, and surrounding neighborhoods in Boston. During the summer and school year, Youth Force hires teams of youth community organizers to work together to make a positive change in their communities. As a community organizer, you will participate in trainings and discussions to learn about your community, talk about different issues that impact you and your peers, and build skills in active listening, public speaking, project planning, and more. You will be responsible for working with your teammates to identify an issue in your community and come up with an original project to address the issue. Past projects have included a digital magazine on climate change and a virtual event to advocate for curriculum changes in Boston schools, including ethnic studies, mental health education, LGBTQ+-inclusive education, and sexual assault prevention education. You will also be responsible for attending community events and participating in other actions for social change.

Attend and actively participate in all Youth Force meetings and workshops on Zoom and in-person, including team building exercises, group discussions, and group projects Complete all work assigned by the deadline Communicate effectively with your supervisor and team members Work with your teammates to complete an action project on an issue that impacts young people in your community Assist with administrative tasks, including sending emails, making phone calls, and creating social media posts
Good team player - You will work with your teammates in large and small groups every day. Excited to learn and try new things - You should be excited about learning new things, asking questions, and having discussions with no right answer. You will need to think creatively and be willing to try new things. Flexibility and patience - Social change takes time, and community organizing is all about working with other people to try and solve big, systemic problems. We spend a lot of time brainstorming, talking, and trying to figure out the best approach. You will need to be flexible because sometimes things change. And you will need to be patient with yourself and your teammates as you figure things out. Tolerant, respectful, and accepting - You will work with people who have different experiences, beliefs, and identities than you. It will be your job to make everyone feel safe and listened to, and to help people work together to make the community better. Basic computer skills and willingness to learn more - We use tools like Zoom, Google Documents, Google Sheets, email, Jamboard, and Canva successfully do our work. You should feel comfortable using a computer and be willing to learn more.
