Boston Fire Department

We are first fire department in the Nation - The origins of the Boston Fire Department date back to 1678 with the establishment of the first engine company and the receipt of the first hand fire engine in North America. The Board of Fire Wards was established on February 1, 1711. In the early years, fire suppression was a bucket brigade, the department progressed, from horse-drawn steam engines and ladders to the modern day fire apparatuses and equipment we have today. We serve each neighborhood in the City with Firehouses strategically located throughout to include specialty units including, but not limited to HazMat and Water Rescue

Through our Community Enrichment and Outreach programs, the Department creates the opportunity to engage with youth that represent every corner of the City through sports, mentorship, leadership, and career development. Each summer, we partner with the Mayor’s summer works initiative and host over 50 teens annually at the Boston Fire Teen Academy. Teens are paired with firefighter mentors that facilitate workshops and demonstrations with overviews of careers. The core tenants of this program are confidence, integrity, responsibility, leadership, teamwork, and respect.
